Wave-current flume tank

Ifremer's wave-current flume tank, in Boulogne sur Mer, is used to study the effects of wave / current / structure interaction under complex environmental conditions. Measurement techniques, which are specific to hydrodynamics, are regularly developed and implemented in this tank. Tests are conducted for French or international partners in the form of research and development projects or services of a confidential nature.

The characteristics of this tank make it unique in Europe. Its instrumentation is specifically designed for hydrodynamics.

Tank characteristics

  • Size: 18 m x 4 m
  • Depth: adjustable - from 0 to 2.2 m
  • Current: regulated speeds between 0.1 and 2.2 m / s, adjustable turbulence rate between 5 and 25%
  • Waves: regular or irregular / maximum height (crest to trough) of 0.3 m / periods from 0.5 to 2 s
  • Wave generator: 6 degrees of freedom / load capacity: 1 ton
  • Type of testing: wave / current / structure interaction effects under complex environmental conditions
