Deep water wave tank

Tank characteristics

  • Size: 50 m long / 12.5 m wide
  • Depth: 20m x 12.5m and 10m x 37.5m
  • Waves: regular and irregular monodirectional waves - maximum crest-to-trough amplitude: 0.5 m
  • Footbridge: speed up to 1.5 m / s
  • Wind tunnel: useful area 4m x 3m, speed up to 9m / s
  • Distinctive characteristic: seawater
  • Type of testing: hydrodynamic behaviour on scale models, in calm waters and heavy swell, on fixed, floating or submarine systems
Ifremer's deep water wave tank in Brest has a monodirectional wave generation capacity and is exceptionally deep (20 m).

It is used to study the hydrodynamic behavior in calm seas and in swell on scale models of fixed, floating or submarine systems.

The types of test conducted in this tank include: hydrodynamic studies and tests (hydrodynamic behaviour on scale models, in calm seas and in swell, on fixed, floating or submarine systems); equipment tests prior to offshore deployment; optimisation of underwater operations by ROV and divers, and acoustic tests.
